[Veerle Verhagen](https://duotank.com/blog/author/veerle-verhagen) Apr 29, 2026 --- **How Duotank Solved Inner-City Beer Distribution Challenges Caused by CO₂ and Weight Regulations**   **Introduction** New government regulations on **CO₂ emissions and vehicle weight restrictions** in the historic inner cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht created a major logistical challenge for Heineken. The new rules limited vehicles operating in these areas to **a maximum weight of 7.5 tons**, while also tightening environmental standards aimed at reducing emissions in densely populated urban centers. Heineken’s existing fleet of **gasoline-powered, heavy tank beer trucks** exceeded these limits, making it impossible to continue serving many hospitality customers in the city centers using their traditional delivery vehicles. Given the importance of these cities as key sales markets, Heineken needed a new way to ensure reliable delivery of fresh draft beer to bars, restaurants, and cafés located within the restricted zones.   **The Challenge** Amsterdam and Utrecht represent two of the most important urban markets for Heineken in the Netherlands. Hundreds of hospitality venues depend on frequent deliveries of fresh tank beer to keep their taps running. However, the combination of **strict emission regulations** and the **7.5-ton vehicle weight limit** created a situation where the existing tank beer distribution system could no longer operate within the city centers. Traditional tank beer trucks were too heavy, and switching to smaller delivery methods would dramatically reduce delivery efficiency, increasing both operational costs and the number of trips required. Heineken therefore needed a solution that could: - Comply with the **7.5-ton vehicle weight restriction** - Meet **zero- or low-emission requirements** - Deliver **large volumes of beer efficiently** - Maintain the **quality and speed of tank beer delivery**   **The Solution** To address this challenge, **Duotank partnered with Heineken** to design a completely new vehicle concept specifically tailored for inner-city distribution. The result was the development of a **lightweight, fully electric tank beer truck** engineered to maximize beer capacity while remaining within the strict 7.5-ton limit. By optimizing materials, tank design, and delivery technology, Duotank created a vehicle capable of transporting significant volumes of beer without exceeding the legal weight restrictions. The design focused on three key principles: - **Lightweight construction** to maximize payload - **Electric propulsion** to comply with emission regulations - **High-efficiency delivery systems** to maintain fast service at hospitality locations This collaboration between Duotank’s engineering expertise and Heineken’s distribution knowledge made it possible to develop a practical and scalable solution.   **The Result** The collaboration led to the creation of the **LGT (Lightweight Tank Beer Truck)**. This innovative vehicle is built on a **7.5-ton Iveco electric truck platform** with a **driving range of approximately 250 kilometers**, making it well suited for daily urban distribution routes. The truck is equipped with a **3,000-liter beer tank** and a fully **MID-certified dispensing system**, ensuring accurate and compliant delivery measurements. With an average delivery speed of **80 liters per minute**, the LGT enables drivers to efficiently supply hospitality venues with fresh tank beer throughout the city centers. Because Heineken transports a large volume of beer into Amsterdam and Utrecht every day, the concept quickly proved its value. The operation was therefore scaled up to a fleet of **seven LGT vehicles**. To further optimize logistics, **two dedicated tank beer HUBs** were established just outside the city centers of Amsterdam and Utrecht. These hubs allow the LGT vehicles to refill quickly and operate efficiently within the restricted urban zones.   **Impact** The LGT solution demonstrates how innovative engineering and close collaboration can overcome complex regulatory challenges. By combining **lightweight vehicle design, electric mobility, and efficient tank beer delivery technology**, Duotank enabled Heineken to continue serving its customers in the historic city centers while fully complying with new environmental and weight regulations.
